1 A4 numbers? on Fri 25 Dec 2009, 22:16

SDESDMS

Hi,

Today, my son became the now proud owner of a BR Sir Nigel Gresley (double chimney)
and I was wondering how many were actually issued as this model does
not seem to be listed specifically on the ace website.

Thanks,

David

Hello

I will endeavour to dig out the A4 archive which is in deep storage later in January to get some figure on your request.

Remind me on <trainsw11@aol.com> in mid January.

Regards

Allen Levy

I am open to correction but I think there may have been in the ACE range at least two BR versions of 60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley." A limited edition was produced for the Gresley A4 Society in BR blue. I think you could also order "Sir Nigel Gresley" with BR numbering and decals but in LNER blue. The model was also available in Garter blue complete with valances as LNER 4498 and in Garter blue as LNER 7 without valances. If I am mistaken please cvorrect Allen. Alan Cliff

I have dealt with the first enquiry concerning post war A4s LNER and BR without valances by E Mail having found an A4 production file in my office this evening while looking for something else.

Concerning other enquiries.

The first blue A4s were distinguished by having a semi matt paint and rather thick red and white lining around the black area of the smokebox.

The paint was more susceptible to production problems when applied to castings which had slight blemishes. There were no other colour variations finished in matt or indeed with the thick front lining. There was I believe an edition of no more than 25 for the Gresley Society I seem to remember that the total allocation was not taken up and the 'overs' were sold to the trade. These were all gloss.

The Thompson Blue( all gloss) version with red lining and 'British Railways' in full on the tender was a much smaller run but I would need to have a dig in the archive for the number.

Allan ; Any idea how many Dominion of Canada's were made in the Garter Blue color or the Mallards?
